2010 - A year of hardboiled events and more

After traveling from the USA for An Event Apart to Australia and Japan for Web Directions in 2009, I had expected 2010 to be quieter. I was wrong. 2010 is going to be busier and more hardboiled than ever.

As well as hosting my own For A Beautiful Web CSS workshops, in 2010 we’re taking For A Beautiful Web to the next level with four new workshops featuring special guest presenters, starting with Designing for Mobile with CSS3 with Dan Rubin in Birminghan (UK) on April 1st and jQuery For Designers with Remy Sharp in London in May.

“Hardboiled Web Design” — talking the talk

I’ve been working on a new talk and throughout the year I will present, “Hardboiled Web Design” at several very special events.

Take an uncompromising look at how to make the most from modern design tools and browsers, up-to-date techniques and processes. In this practical, design-focused talk, Andy will discuss the “how” as well as the “why,” and challenge your preconceptions to help you make better work for the web. Learn the most modern, forward-moving, and sometimes experimental CSS techniques, and why a forward-looking approach to CSS will pay real dividends.

If you’re in the USA, catch “Hardboiled Web Design” at An Event Apart Seattle (April 5th 7th), An Event Apart Boston (May 24th 25th), An Event Apart Washington DC (September 16th 17th), and An Event Apart San Diego (November 1st 2nd).

Not in the USA? Not to worry, I will be presenting “Hardboiled Web Design” at the DIBI conference at The Sage, Gateshead on 28th April , alongside Jina Bolton, Tim Van Damme, Sarah Parmenter and others, plus @media 2010 in London on June 10th and 11th.

For A Beautiful Web will also be joining forces with our friends at @media to present a brand new Hardboiled Web Design workshop in London on June 9th .

Before then, I will be demonstrating some of my latest hardboiled CSS3 techniques and explaining how you can use them in your everyday work today in a talk named after my favourite hardboiled detective novel, Mickey Spillane’s “I The Jury”.

Catch this talk at two Speak The Web events: Speak The Web Leeds on February 11th and Speak The Web Manchester on February 17th .

“Hardboiled Web Design” — the book

My biggest news is that I’m soon to begin writing my next book, coincidentally titled “Hardboiled Web Design”. From the introduction:

Like the hardboiled school of American detective fiction of the 1930’s and ’40’s, “Hardboiled Web Design” will be an uncompromising look at why and how the web site design and development process needs to change to make the most from modern design tools and browsers and up-to-date techniques and processes. it will discuss the whys as well as the hows and will challenge your preconceptions to make better work for the web.

“Hardboiled Web Design” will be hard, not soft-boiled. Like a hardboiled detective, it will pull no punches in explaining HTML5 and CSS3 in the context of the complete process of making the web. It will take a cold, hard look at the realities of designing and developing for an ever changing and expanding browser/device landscape and suggest radical new ways to deal with the issues of coping with older browsers and technologies.

The strong, silent type

While I’m writing, things may be a little quieter around here, but if you’re attending any of these events in 2010, be sure to come over and say “hello”. I’d love to show you in person, some of the things I’m working on for the new book.
